College Fair

If your student is headed to college, you owe it to yourself to attend at least one college fair. I would wait until your child’s junior year. If your child has reached the senior year, definitely go now. Last week, I attended a college fair at Maryville College and learned a few things.

Maryville College Fair

Maryville College Fair at Clayton Center for the Arts

It happened in the beautiful Clayton Center for the Arts in downtown Maryville, TN.

  1. Very few people came to this college fair, not sure why. Is college attendance going through an attrition?
  2. The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) generously hands out full merit scholarships for four years to students with any SAT score about 1390. Our son, already accepted by UAH, scored in the 1500s, so he can have a full ride in Alabama. For those who do not know, in the US, state universities split students into two categories: in-state and out-of-state. In-state students pay a lot less in tuition than out-of-state students.
  3. The UAH Admissions Counselor invited us to visit the campus. He handed me his card and told me to email him the dates in advance, so he can schedule a meeting with the faculty of the computer engineering department.
  4. UAH sends interns to SpaceX all the time. Since my son’s dream is to work for SpaceX, this would fit into our plan nicely.
  5. TN Tech is non-committal, but December 15 remains the deadline to apply for scholarships (and sign up for a dorm room).
  6. The Vanderbilt University Admissions Counselor gave me her card and invited me to email her so that she could put me in touch directly with the lady who helps homeschoolers with their paperwork.
  7. There are many colleges out there that will offer students a lot of scholarships. One only must look for the right fit.
