We live in a mountain resort and many black bears live here with us. They visit our neighborhood daily and go by our house at different hours of the day. There is no routine, so I do not walk around our neighborhood that much anymore.
I miss walking through our neighborhood because it is so hilly and wooded, it is simply a beautiful walk. But these bears are everywhere these days, at all hours of the day and night. They trigger our cameras at odd times so we cannot detect a routine or a pattern.
So I have to get in my car and drive to a gym or a track in order to exercise. Oh well, I suppose there could be worse things.
In fact, I love these bears. They are so cute and not harmless at all. They just want to eat and will leave you alone if you leave them alone. If you see one, you have to raise your arms and make loud sounds to scare them. They will run away from you.
The other rule is you should not feed them. A fed bear is a dead bear. If bears get used to human food, they will condition themselves to less and less foraging in the forest and they become a threat to humans.
I am so grateful that Providence has placed me in this town to raise my family next to these beautiful Ursus Americanus – the black bears of North America.
