My children attend a homeschool co-op which organizes spring formals every year. Call it Junior Prom, call it a banquet, call it a dance, call it whatever you want. It is a fun evening spent with friends, fabulous food, and music. Everyone gets to dress up and act like they know what they are doing.
For all the negative comments about homeschoolers and socialization, our children have so many opportunities to socialize. Arguing against the stereotype of weird, unsocialized homeschoolers is so easy. I can promise you these homeschoolers in high school, who have been homeschooled since the very beginning, have better manners and social interactions than public school students.
I love that our daughter is now in 9th grade and, as such, she can attend these banquets with our son. He can drive them to and from the prom, so I get to stay home and relax. As much as a mom of teenagers can relax when she knows they are driving back home in the dark. But one must start somewhere, with even a little bit of courage. Or none at all. You do it scared. You allow them to go and pray they will return safely.
Dressing Up Is Hard To Do
Back to our daughter: she refused to put on a fluffy gown. As a typical teenager, she goes through phases. We went to 12 different stores to find a suit and I suppose we would have done the same in looking for a dress. What matters is that she had fun and her friends complimented her looks, as we did. She did look pretty cute in that suit, don’t you think? Both of them did.
Have your children attended a prom this year? How did you find that experience? Did you have to drive them there? Was it fun looking for outfits?
