We have started visiting universities. TN Tech is in Cookeville, TN – about three hours from our house. We started with it because we had friends who also happened to want to visit this week.
Next, we will visit UT Chattanooga and Southern Adventist University, both in one day. Due to their proximity to each other, we hope to see one in the morning and the other in the afternoon. We might regret it by the end of the day. Nevertheless, we must try it. Then, we will know for sure if two campuses in one day may be too much.
We liked the campus and the people there. Our son spent more than an hour with the Computer Engineering Department interim chairman, Indril Bhattacharya, asking all sorts of questions and getting answers. Due to the nature of homeschooling, our son knows he can teach himself a lot of computer skills. The challenge is to find the right fit for him, for his level.
We did not have time to visit the dorm. They had already shown us a video about the different housing options. It was more important to spend time with the professor, understanding the academic path and employment opportunities at TN Tech.
When putting universities on the list, we looked at our son’s SAT score, location, type of college/university, strength of their computer engineering department, and cost. We are not emotionally involved with any one of these colleges. Follow the money, everybody tells us. It does not matter where they go, as long as they graduate without debt. So at the end of the day, all things being equal, we will make a final decision in April. That is when we receive the financial aid packages from different universities.
