I read 1,000 books before Kindergarten to my children. By the time we enrolled them officially in our homeschool as “Kindergarten students,” my children could read on a 3rd grade level. Use this Reading Level Test to assess where your child is now.
Please remember children learn to read at different rates and ages. Do not rush a child. Simply surround your children with books – visually and audibly. While in a car, children can listen to a lot of vocabulary way beyond their reading level. Vocabulary is the number 1 predictor of success later in life. Period.
Expose your children to vocabulary through great literature and lay the foundation for their academic success. It’s an investment in their future careers.

We listened to a lot of books in the car as I took my children to different places. My son started reading street signs at age 3. I knew he could read by the time he got to age 5, which is Kindergarten in the US, but I did not know how well. I was amazed to discover he could read on a 3rd grade level. His vocabulary impressed people we met, too.
As the kids got older, they listened to their content on various devices, with headphones. I listened to my own books through the car speakers as I drove. Win-win.
